How to reinforce and extend a W24X131 structural column without shutting down the operation of a movie theater above?
Column with temporary Truss installed
Construction Procedures
1. Excavate the site to the depth as required for the installation of the new grade beam and remove the surrounding concrete to expose the column base.
2. Install the new pier/pier cap on each side of the column.
3. Install reinforcing/ connecting plates on both faces of existing column
4. Install the temporary framing truss.
5. Loosen the nuts of the existing column anchor bolts.
6. Set up instrument to monitor the existing column movement.
7. Install jacking device at each column of the supporting truss.

8. Slowly and simultaneously jack up the frame. Stop the force as soon as the existing column starts to move upward.
9. Use steel plate to shim the base of both temporary columns to provide solid bearing and then tighten the anchor bolts.
10. Remove the jacking device as required.
11. Remove the grout and shim plate under the existing column.
12. Double check the monitor instrument to make sure no movement on the existing column.

Column with supporting Grade Beam Removed
Extended and Reinforced Column sitting on new Grade Beam with temporary Truss removed
13. Start removing the existing grade beam and the top portion of the existing pier (the vertical bars in the existing pier need to be preserved so that they can be cast into new grade beam).
14. Extend the existing column with W24X250 as indicated (full penetration weld needs to be x-rayed to verify the quality of the connection).
15. Pour new grade beam.
16. Add non-shrink grout beneath the base plate of the extended column.
17. Start removing the temporary framing after the concrete of the new foundation reaches its designed strength.
18. Remove the wing tags of the reinforcing/ connecting plate.
